New challenges, a pandemic, a major flood, a “Where’s Waldo” Vicar, and outreach challenges… 2020 has been an interesting year for the Anglican Church of the Valley in Staunton.

This is an amazing moment, with extraordinary opportunities. A pause in the rush of modern life to take stock. To evaluate where we are. A chance to examine our ‘burnt offerings’ and think about how to deepen our vision of worship in this season.

How lovely that we can still be tuneful, that we can still pay attention to words and rhythms and joyful cadences… and although we may not sing robustly together for a while, what fun to learn to hum our praises.

More than Charlottesville, more than Richmond, perhaps more than any other place in Virginia, Emporia would appear on the surface to be a place ripe for violent protests.

We praise God for the institutions of the Rev. Drew Thomas and Rev. Travis Hines.

The Lord is at work in our midst, as His people. Jesus is still standing among the lampstands, holding the stars in His right hand, speaking that two-edged sword. If you think about this western DOMA outpost, pray for us. Thank the Lord for the “now,” and ask Him to keep moving us into His “not yet.” Ask Him to open our eyes to see as He does. We will pray the same for you.
