Online Book Club Success

Online Book Club Success

By Heather Dollenger

(Here is an example of how technology can be used to encourage fellowship and enduring friendships over the miles.)

A dear friend of mine hosted a homeschool writing class for her kids and a book club for her friends when she lived in Virginia. When she moved, but wanted to continue the class so her kids could still see their old friends, she began using Zoom. It worked great for the class and she left the meeting open before and after class times for the kids to chat. When she had a hard time finding women interested in a book club in her new small town, she reached out to friends all over the country that she’d been in book clubs with over many moves as a military wife and invited us to an online book club. There are as many as a dozen of us who join in for book discussions twice a month. Most of us use the video feature but if someone happens to be out of town, has a bad internet connection, or is traveling in a car during the meeting, they’ve also called in using the phone option to participate. It’s been a great way to keep connected when thousands of miles lie between us.
