A Celebration of Missions
by Tony Niles
Pentecost Sunday has long been a celebration at Truro Anglican (Fairfax, VA) of many cultures and languages attesting to the Gospel of the risen Christ, fitting well with Truro's location at an international crossroads and a congregation speaking many tongues. Although the pageantry may not have returned following the pandemic, this year was an occasion for recognition and celebration of 23 mission partners scattered around the globe.
The missions focus included preaching at Sunday morning services by Jenny Noyes, Executive Director of New Wineskins Missionary Network and former Truro member. Jenny reminded the congregation of Truro's long history of empowerment by the Spirit and sending out missionaries to the four corners of the globe. Between services, the World Expo Event, directed by Rev. Jose Garrigo, Director of Outreach, was held with mission partners presenting their work sharing the good news and compassion of Jesus locally and abroad. Over 300 people visited partners and displays showing help to agriculture in South Sudan, aid to Middle East refugees from ISIS enslavement, aid to churches in Cuba, help to homeless and imprisoned in Fairfax County, and many other missions, several in oppressive conditions. Connections were made among the mission partners and even some visitors hoping to join partners in the mission field. Perfect weather contributed to the success of the Expo, as well as the novelty of in-person fellowship rather than another Zoom meeting! The Spirit was truly present!
