Celebrating Native American Heritage

My people, hear my teaching;
    listen to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth with a parable;
    I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
things we have heard and known,
    things our ancestors have told us.
We will not hide them from their descendants;
    we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
    his power, and the wonders he has done.

November is Native American Heritage Month; this is an excellent time to be intentional about hearing the stories and understanding the experiences of Native American or First Nations people.  For groups who experienced violent and dehumanizing oppression at the hands of people who used the Bible as a weapon, I often say that their faith represents a powerful miracle of the Holy Spirit. Our Native American brothers and sisters are one of those groups. The above passage from Psalm 78 reminds me of the long persistence of their faith and faithfulness.
