A Logo Story: All Souls Anglican Church, Richmond, VA
Many of the churches in the Diocese have very intentional logos used as a part of their church’s story and mission. All Souls Anglican Church, Richmond, VA shares their logo and its inspiration.
by Danny Hindman
All Soul’s logo was designed in partnership with Lumiére Creative Co. (Sarah Bartee) out of Norfolk, VA. Sarah was a wonderful person to work with. Over the course of a few months, we worked through a series of revisions based on what we hoped our community would become: a place to be seen and welcomed, a place where God is sense-able (Gen. 28:16) and worshiped in spirit and truth, a place to which outsiders are invited, and a place from which everyone is equipped to serve their neighbors in the name of Jesus Christ.
We wanted our logo to be beautiful, ancient, and explicitly Christian. We wanted it to convey, first, that we are a church (important!), a connection to the past, that we value beauty as an essential characteristic of God. Further, it was important that the logo express that our community, while sincere, does not take itself overly-seriously, and is a place to come unvarnished and unafraid.
The lamb of God, triumphant over death, delivered to us ineffably in the Eucharist was a perfect subject for these goals. In its main expression, this icon is surrounded by arched and leaded windows, though several of the lines are intentionally offset and not "square."
We are very proud of the work Sarah did, and it has born fruit for our little church plant. On multiple occasions, people have come to our church (and stayed!) because the beauty of our logo gave them pause. Obviously, a logo isn't everything. But for us, it's been something.
The Rev. Danny Hindman is the Vicar at All Souls Anglican Church in Richmond, VA.
